ACLD Teen Scene

{March 6, 2009}   Neal Shusterman was here

Neal Shusterman and me The Friends of the Library brought Neal Shusterman to Alachua County.  He visited a bunch of middle and high schools (was yours one of them?) and he stopped by the downtown library last night.

He did a question and answer session; I asked him about his favorite books and authors.  He told us that he used to be really into Roald Dahl, especially Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  When he was in middle school he read a lot of Stephen King; he couldn’t sleep with the lights out for weeks after he read The Shining!  In college, his favorites were Kurt Vonnegut and John Irving; he loved A Prayer for Owen Meany.  A couple of recent books that he recommends are The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.  He’s also a fan of Orson Scott Card (they’re friends!).

The book club from Williston High School came to see Mr. Shusterman.  They took a picture with him and got an autographed Everlost poster.  Speaking of Everlost, he’s about to start writing the third book in the Skinjacker trilogy.  He also told us that he’ll be writing another Antsy book.

If you missed Mr. Shusterman, sorry!  The good news is, we usually have a couple of authors visit each year.  If there’s anyone you’d like us to bring to Alachua County, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.  Comment on this blog or our MySpace page, email us at, call us at 352.334.3941, or visit us at the downtown library.
